A Study On English-Chinese Translation Of Number And Increase And Decrease Of Quantity In Science And Technology Articles

English of Science and Technology is the main branch of English for Special Purposes, and has grown into an important featured English language style. Usage of numbers and increase and decrease of quantities are essential parts in English of Science and Technology. Mastering number and quantity related translation skill is of vital importance. The difficulties in translation of numbers and increase and decrease of quantities in science and technology articles with these articles’ own specialty make it more necessary to study intensively in the translation of numbers.Based on previous research achievements, and combined with this translation practice and experience, the author, through the method of theory and examples, focuses on translation of definite number, indefinite number and increase/decrease of quantity, and explores the problems, principle and technique in translation of English of Science and Technology. The author finds that1) About definite number,"complete copy" method is applied in translation of percentage, number with unit and year expression, other areas are further discussed including conversion from "thousand system" of English to "ten-thousand system" of Chinese, the scope of using "characters" instead of "numbers" in Science and Technology article, and minimal value.2) About indefinite number, emphases are paid to special expression habits in translation of science and technology article.3) About increase and decrease of quantity, regarding increase and decrease of concrete data, multiple, percentage and fraction, differences between English and Chinese expression are discussed especially in translation of multiple.Translation technique and skill in number, increase and decrease of quantity should be applied to make sure translation version concise and accurate. Reference and suggestion has been concluded and may put in use for future translation practice. While the author also realizes the limitation that English corpus is from public health and it does not cover all the situations facing by other science and technology disciplines, so further exploration need to be applied.
