Chinese modern construction started in the opium war, and ended when People’sRepublic of China was founded. In this special time, Chinese construction wassignificantly affected by foreign construction. Foreign architectures were situated in theplaces where modern Chinese cities started, and this marks the coming of a specialperiod. Wuhan is a port city and also in a transportation hub position. During thisspecial time, Britain, Russia, France, Germany and Japan all set up their concessions inHankou (one part of Wuhan). With the development of those concessions, the economyof Hankou began to blossom, the form of architecture also changed, and new economiccenter and cultural center began to form. Regardless of class consciousness in the fieldof ideology, some outstanding modern architecture and the historic blocks have highhistory research value and artistic value which deserve to study further. These oldbuildings and blocks has changed along with the development of society, and theirsocial positioning has also changed. how to reflect these buildings and to a great extentis need to study the value of the historic blocks. How to maximize the value of thesebuildings and historic blocks deserves to research.With the development of city, some outstanding old buildings, even the historicblocks slowly disappeared. People need to realize the importance of protecting thosehistoric buildings and blocks, and endow new social functions to them. In thisdissertation, through field investigation and visit to Hankou Jianghan Road and thedevelopment history of Wuhan, the author analyzed and interpreted the remainingarchitecture and their surroundings, to understand what changes they had experienced inthe process of urban development, and what changes had taken place to theirsurroundings. In terms of the importance and necessity of protecting the historic blocks, in this dissertation, the author aims to explore the value of existing historicblocks in Wuhan, and their development potential. By analyzing some successfulhistoric blocks renewal cases at home and abroad, and combined with China’s actuallaws and regulations and the field research, the author intends to put forward someproblems about Hankou Jianghan Road, and discuss about the solutions.Wuhan is one of the119national historical and cultural cities in China, and is a recenthistory culture form of metropolis. There are many historic buildings with rich culturalbackground in this city, and the historic blocks consisted of those buildings carrieshistorical memory, which reflected a special "Han" culture, blending both Chinese andwestern culture. Owing to Jianghan Road’s unique construction and developmentprocess, the blocks and street on Jianghan Road typically represent and concentrateWuhan city culture.
