The interpretation of Chinese culture-loaded expressions into English hasposed a great challenge to interpreters in interpretation practices. The interpretivetheory divides the interpreting activity into three steps: understanding,de-verbalization, and re-expression and argues that the purpose of interpretation is tocommunicate and deliver messages, so a flexible strategy that seeks equivalence ofmeaning should be taken. This thesis has explored and studied the translatability of Chineseculture-loaded expressions in an interpretive theoretical framework. By a closeexamination of examples taken from interpretation of press conferences and speechesby national leaders in recent years, especially interpretation of Chinese expressionsthat carry strong cultural connotations, the author has found that the interpretiveapproach is highly effective in coping with Chinese culture-loaded expressions andthat all such expressions are relatively translatable.
