A Study Of Chinese-English Interpreting Strategies For Culture-loaded Expressions From The Perspective Of Script Theory

This thesis approaches the C-E interpreting strategies of Chinese culture-loaded expressions from the perspective of Script Theory. Since the reform and opening up, China has witnessed more and more exchanges with other countries in political, economic and cultural fields. Press conferences, as an important platform of foreign exchanges, play an important role. In press conferences, C-E interpreting of Chinese culture-loaded expressions is often a tough thing to the interpreters. Therefore, it is significant to study the C-E interpreting strategies of Chinese culture-loaded expressions in press conferences.Script Theory is an important component of cognitive linguistics. As an approach used to describe information of a series of specific events, Script Theory has been widely applicable in interpreting studies. Therefore, Script Theory is used to explore C-E interpreting strategies of Chinese culture-loaded expressions in press conferences, specifically devoted to the following two questions:(1) During the process of script activation, what strategies and methods can be adopted in C-E interpreting of Chinese culture-loaded expressions? (2) During the process of script building, what strategies and methods can be adopted in C-E interpreting of Chinese culture-loaded expressions?The thesis concerns itself with a case study, and the data are collected from the press conferences interpreting texts of Chinese leader’s speeches at 2004-2014 press conferences. It is concluded that:(1) During the process of script activation, the interpreter flexibly adopts different translation methods (literal translation, literal translation with annotation, corresponding translation and interpretation) and translation strategies (domestication and foreignization) to fulfill the translation purpose. (2) During the process of script building, literal translation and free translation are adopted by interpreter.From the perspective of Script Theory, this thesis discusses the C-E interpreting strategies and methods of Chinese culture-loaded expressions in press conferences, which extends the application of Script Theory on one hand, and to some extent, promotes the C-E interpreting study of Chinese culture-loaded expressions in press conferences.
