Under the context of economic globalization, China is developing ever-increasing international exchanges with other countries and regions. Interpretation, an indispensable way of communication, plays an increasingly important role in cross-cultural communicative activities. However, as a newly emerging science, interpreting doesn’t receive equal attention compared with translation. With the wide use of culture-loaded expressions in press conferences, much more emphasis is placed on the culture factors involved in interpreting. The application of culture-loaded expressions adds a special flavor to the Chinese language and is beneficial to promote national culture; however, it brings various interpreting difficulties which pose a great challenge to interpreters. Therefore, a study on the strategies to deal with the interpreting difficulties during cultural interpreting is necessary and worthwhile. In the light of Interpretive Theory, the author carried out a qualitative study on the interpreting of culture-loaded expressions with examples. The materials mainly come from the speeches of the Chinese President and the Prime Minister at the National People’s Congress(NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference(CPPCC) held from 2010-2014.This study conducted an analysis of the interpreting difficulties and concluded that there were two kinds of interpreting difficulties involved in the cultural interpreting, that is, the difficulties in coping with cultural differences and the difficulties in handling unpredictable interference factors. After analyzing its causes, the author put forward some strategies such as “identification of main ideas” and “application of extra-linguistic knowledge” in comprehension; “maximizing the usage of memory storage” in deverbalization as well as five coping strategies in re-expression, such as “utilizing corresponding cultural expressions”, “achieving general equivalence”, “adopting free interpreting”, “adopting contextual interpreting”, and “adjusting logic relationship”.This dissertation included six parts. The first chapter introduced the background, significance and methodology of the study. Chapter two was the literature review, including the studies on interpreting and studies on translation of culture-loaded expressions as well as the studies on culture-loaded expressions at home and abroad. In the third part, this thesis gave an overview of Interpretive Theory and the basic viewpoints involved in the theory. Chapter four focused on an analysis of the interpreting difficulties in the cultural interpretation and its causes. Chapter five came up with some coping strategies to deal with these interpreting difficulties. The final part summarized the whole dissertation, analyzing the limitations of the study and offered suggestions for future researches. In conclusion, it is feasible for the interpreters to conduct the culture-loaded interpreting from the perspective of Interpretive Theory. The interpreting strategies put forward by this thesis can benefit the vocational interpreting and professional interpreting teaching.
