Based on the strategy of spatial configuration and the relative analyticalmethod, the research is to discuss the interactive relationship between spatialmorphology and behavioral style within the traditional settlements of Shanxi. Thusthe internal dynamics of the settlements will be revealed by quantitative analysis.Spatial configuration is an inner phenomenon, which can be discovered inbuild environment of various types. The past research of traditional settlementswould put more attention about apparent appearance such as the material ofbuildings, the decoration techniques, the scale of the streets and so forth. The articlewill abstract the spatial elements, in accordance with the integrity, the dynamicityand the interactivity of settlements, to establish the quantitative reference systems ofspace by calculating the topological relation of multiple elements. With the validity of spatial configuration, the article analyzes theenvironment and the distribution of traditional settlements in Shanxi. Thesamples are classified and compared according to the natural geographicelements and the social cultural elements. Besides the general research, specific samples are converted to objective data with the aid of analyticalsoftware platform. The spatial morphology is interpreted both synchronicallyand diachronically. The data are collected for contrast and linear regressionanalysis. The quantitative analysis of space configuration will expand the visionof settlements research, rationalizing the study of spatial morphology. It alsoprovides an effective instrument for planning and conservation of traditionalsettlements. With the data of different period, the measure system will beestablished with the objective assessment and theoretical foundation.
