On Strategies Employed In Interpreting Chinese Paratactic Sentences: A Report On The Simulated Interpreting Of “Insight, New Ideas” Conference

This report is based on the author’s simulated Chinese-English interpreting practice of “Insight, New Ideas” Conference, in which two famous stars are interviewed separately to discuss public welfare and other hot topics. In the process of this task, the author played video, interpreted and recorded the interpretation. As a turning point in the study of interpreting, the Interpretive Theory, in which the process of conveying meaning is studied on the basis of observation and analysis, builds a triangle model of interpretation. The procedure of interpretation is concluded as comprehension, deverbalization, and re-expression.This report adopts the Interpretive Theory to cope with difficulties of logical mess, a lack of information and so on. It analyzes the stylistic features of the source material, such as using many Chinese paratactic sentences, colloquial language, and crowded information. Through the study, this paper proposes three strategies – handling of logic, simplification, and topic-prominence. Under these three strategies, there are six techniques in total, including conjunctions addition, part of sentences addition, synonyms omission, meaning summarization, word order adjustment and modified expression. The author hopes that more strategies and techniques for interpreting Chinese paratactic sentences can be provided by doing and analyzing this simulated interpreting practice.
