From the perspective of Hermeneutics, based on George Steiner’s fourfold motion theory, this thesis takes the subtitle translation of The Grandmaster as a case study to justify the exertion of the subtitle translator’s subjectivity. In this thesis, the author adopts literature review, qualitative analysis, descriptive method and case study method to analyze the subjectivity of the subtitle translator in subtitle translation. This thesis aims at appealing for the urgent attention of the subtitle translators, and justifying how the subtitle translators exert their subjectivity in the Chinese film during the translation process. This thesis intends to improve the quality of subtitle translation and promote the export of Chinese films in the international film market.Due to the characteristics of the film subtitle, constricted by the instantaneity and no-notation, subtitle translators are required to give a full play to their subjectivity. To change the unbalanced situation that more imported films than exported films in China, the subtitle translation of Chinese films catches the urgent attention. Therefore, the author takes the subtitle translation of the kungfu film The Grandmaster as a case study to discuss the exertion of the subtitle translator’s subjectivity. The subtitle translation of The Grandmaster is rendered by the famous Australia Sinologist and subtitle translator Linda Jaivin. Linda has been rich in subtitling experience and formed her own characteristics and style, and summarized the basic principles of subtitle translation.Through the case study, the author points out that the subtitle translator’s subjectivity penetrates through the whole translation process. In the first place, the subtitle translator trusts the original work, and then invades the original work with his/her own aesthetic appreciation and literary creativity. Furthermore, with the appropriate translation strategy, the subtitle translator incorporates the characteristics of the language and form from the target language. Finally, the translator compensates the loss of culture to keep the balance between the original work and the translated version, to reach the fusion horizon.
