The cultural exchange is an important communication form among countries and also a significant way to deepen the knowledge of a nation. With more than two thousand years of friendly exchanges, both Malaysia and China attach importance to maintaining their friendship. As a permanent venue to hold China-ASEAN Expo, Guangxi pays more attention to the contact with ASEAN countries, leading to the great demand of English-Chinese translation on ASEAN culture and customs in recent years. This thesis is based on the E-C translation project of Malaysia(Excerpt). At first, the author collected articles about cultural translation and some materials on Malaysian culture introduction in order to get a general knowledge of related common translation skills and Malaysian culture. Then the author analyzed the translation task, arranged the translation process and established the terminology bank. After the author finished the first draft, the Malay cultural consultant, a Malay teacher proofread the first draft to control the quality by keeping the accuracy of culture concept and information. The final version was completed by the tutor who ensured the fluency, completeness and accuracy. Comparing the first draft with the final version, the author summarized and analyzed the problems and solutions of the translation of words, sentences and the discourse in the translation process under the guidance of Verschueren’s Adaption Theory. Besides, according to the characteristics of translation task, the author discussed the translation of culture-loaded words. The author hopes this thesis can be of further reference for similar E-C translation projects about folk culture. This thesis consists of five chapters: Chapter 1 introduces the background of the translation project on culture and customs; Chapter 2 describes the translation task; Chapter 3 presents the preparation before translation in terms of text analysis, arrangement of the translation process as well as the establishment of the terminology bank; Chapter 4 analyzes the typical cases in the translation process which is the biggest harvest of this translation practice and the center of the report.
