Prose is favorable by textbook editors and international students, because of its short style, rich in content for the Chinese teaching as a foreign language at intermediate and advanced stages. Through investigation and internship, the writer found some problems in such stages, and these problems restrict the development of the prose teaching and learning. For this situation, this article focuses on the systematic research of how to conduct prose teaching in classroom, prose teaching methods, how to solve the common problems of the prose teaching, and the full text is divided into five chapters.In the Introduction, it presents the research object, purpose and methods of this study, and reviews the major research result in China in the prose teaching as first language and as a second language.Chapter One states the necessity of the prose teaching from the number of prose passages in the textbooks, the specialty of prose style, and the difference of teaching object. It analyzes the existing problems from three aspects: teachers, students, textbooks.In Chapter Two, the prose teaching content is divided into four aspects: vocabulary teaching, grammar, rhetoric and culture teaching, according to the students learning needs and teaching goal. And it discusses how to adopt appropriate teaching methods.In Chapter Three, three teaching methods are analyzed: scene representation method, the similarities and differences comparison method, and specific theme study, through combining the characteristics of prose itself and the teaching method. It claims we can adopt appropriate teaching methods according to different types of essays.Chapter Four puts forward three strategies to enhance the teaching effect: to improve teachers’ own ability, to choose the appropriate teaching materials and contents, to combine the classroom teaching and extracurricular practice.Chapter Five gives specific teaching examples about personal prose, scenery prose, and cultural prose.In conclusion, it summarizes the full text, and points out what is to be further studied.
