Short-term memory is very important to the interpreters. Taking good control of the short-term memory can benefit both consecutive interpretation and simultaneous interpretation to a large degree. When talking about the qualifications which an interpreter should equip with, Phelan used to said, “An interpreter needs a good short-term memory to retain what he or she has just heard.” During a conference, a good command of the short-term memory can dramatically increase the interpreting quality. Therefore, to improve the short-term memory is a challenge that every interpreter has to face. The application of the Cohesion Theory can effectively enhance the interpreters’ memory ability, thus improving the interpreting quality. From the aspects of Cohesion Theory and short-term memory consumption, this practice report aims to illustrate how to strengthen the short-term memory by taking good advantage of Cohesion Theory through large amount of examples.
