Principles of Ci is an anthology of Ci poems compiled by Chen Tingzhuo, a famous Ci critic and poet in the Qing Dynasty. Chen selected a large number of Ci poems from the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Principles of Ci is a large anthology ranging several dynasties and with views and historical facts. In the thesis, the author, from the perspective of textual analysis, explored Chen’s selection intention and views from selection types, selection intention, selection fields and selection arrays, and made a comparison between other important Ci anthologies. Besides, the author further explored Chen’s selection awareness and complemented Chen’s views on Ci. The thesis will be of great importance to the comprehensive and objective understanding of Chen Tingzhuo’s views on Ci, and of great value for studying the development of the Ci in the Qing Dynasty and the study of the Ci in the Qing Dynasty. The author studied the Principles of Ci from the following four chapters. Chapter One introduces the selection type and the characteristics of the compilation. The general preface and four separated prefaces in Principles of Ci have distinctive th eoretical architecture, all linked to one another, end to end, illustrating Chen Tingzhuo ’s "elegance-advocated, faithfulness-based and melancholy-cored" view on Ci.Chen also selected a large number of works of obscure poets to display the development history of Ci. In the explanation on the compilation method of the Principles of Ci, Chen Tingzhuo wrote that the anthology was uniquely compiled into four parts: "Daya (Big elegance)", "Fangge (Songs)", "Biediao (Ditty)" and "Xianqing (Idle Feelings)". Chen took "Daya" as the orthodox school while other three parts as complements. Thus, Chen took his selection standard as the compilation principles. The author comprehensively analyzed the selection standard and compilation method and concluded that Chen Tingzhuo had the innovative spirit and independent awareness.Chapter Two mainly studied the selection intention and selection field. Chen Tingzhuo compiled the Principles of Ci, a Ci anthology with views and historical facts, to elaborate his views on Ci and provide a good method and model example for future Ci learners. Chen also selected a large number of works of obscure poets to display the development history of Ci. Besides, the author analyzed in detail the part of Principles of Ci-Preface and studied on the selected works and Chen Tingzhuo’s comments, which demonstrated Chen Tingzhuo’s "elegance-advocated, faithfulness-based and melancholy-cored" selection standard. As a dynasty-cross anthology, it obviously has a wide scope to select Ci poets and poems. Besides, Chen Tingzhuo paid much attention to the works’ value rather than poets’ identity, gender, political status or moral. Through a statistical analysis of the Ci poets and Ci poems in different dynasties, the author concluded that Chen Tingzhuo had an obvious dynasty preference and strong awareness of the history of Ci.Chapter Three mainly studied the selection appearance. The author quantitatively analyzed the Ci poet and Ci poems in the Principles of Ci from the perspective of selected types and groups, through which the author found Chen didn’t select the Ci poems according to Ci poets’ status. Besides, all the works in the anthology are elegant, which displays Chen Tingzhuo’s aim to compile a model Ci.Chapter Four mainly introduced the similarities and differences of the Principle s of Ci and Synthesis of Ci as well as Selections of Ci. The author analyzed the inherit ance and innovation of Chen Tingzhuo’s views on Ci poems by relating to his thought s’ developments and changes on Ci.The general preface and four separated prefaces in Principles of Ci have distinctive theoretical architecture, all linked to one another, en d to end, illustrating Chen Tingzhuo’s "elegance-advocated, faithfulness-based and m elancholy-cored" view on Ci.
