China is the first country to start the research of grammaticalization, or the research of how a content word becomes functional. Until the early 20th century, Meillet, French linguist, created the word "Grammaticalization" and put it in use.In Chinese, most adverbs come from content words, and the Chinese character Bai is also no exception. The character Bai is commonly used in modern Chinese. As a morpheme, it can help to form a new word. As one independent character, it can be used as adjective, verb, noun and adverb. Of all the previous researches about Bai, which has accomplished a lot of achievements, there are two research perspectives: synchronic and diachronic. Synchronic studies about Bai include the study of Bai as a color word; the study of related constructions including the character Bai; and the study of the rationality about the constructions. Synchronic studies about Bai include the grammaticalization and other development about Bai. In this paper, based on the analysis of the synchronic corpus, we’re doing some researches to find out how the character Bai gradually evolves from a color word to an adverb, what start this process and how they perform. All the sentences in this paper come from Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU (CCL). After the consolidation and analysis of the sentences from CCL, we’ve sorted out the beginning, development, peak and settlement of Bai’s grammaticalization. During this process, it turns out that cognitive causes, mainly metaphor and metonymy, are the pilot causes of the Chinese character Bai’s grammaticalization. And the change in syntactic location is its main performance mechanism. The paper is divided into five parts, and the specific details are as follow:First part, it’s the introduction. In this part, we will introduce the focus, purpose, significance, source of study materials and method of study of this paper. In the second part, we will introduce the current state of the study about grammaticalization and the character Bai. In the meantime, some related concepts are also going to be explained to help readers understand this paper mjore easily. The third part is the study about character Bai’s grammaticalization from a diachronic perspective. This whole process will be divided into eight phases, which are Zhou Dynasty, Spring and Autumn period, Han Dynasty, Six Dynasties、Sui and Tang Dynasty、Five Dynasties, Song and Yuan Dynasty, Ming and Qing Dynasty, Republic of China, and Modern Times. The forth part is to go deeper to discuss the motivation and mechanism of the character Bai’s grammaticalization process. The fifth part is the summary of the whole paper, including the conclusion, innovation and inadequacy of this paper. We hope that this paper will be helpful in the study of the character Bai and grammaticalization.
