This is a project report on translation of Chapter VI and Conclusion of Change And Continuity In Chinese Local History:The Development Of Hui-chou Prefecture 800 to 1800 written by Harriet T Zurndorfur. Through Anhui school painting, local deity cult and Hui-chou drama, etc., these two parts give an introduction of the elite and popular culture in Hui-chou during Ming and Qing, and a conclusion of the whole book.Similarity among every culture makes translation possible while individuality of each culture makes translation necessary and at the same time leads to the difficulty of translation. How to translate in answer to the differences caused by culture individuality has always been argued by scholars. First, the source text, a monograph on humanities, introduces the Hui-chou culture in the eye of foreign scholar Harriet T Zurndorfur, and the target of the translator is to show Chinese scholars how Western scholars regard China. Second, this project is special because it’s from Chinese to English and then back to Chinese. Basing on these two points, the author chooses cultural equivalence as the guiding theory, and analyzes how to adopt appropriate translation skills under the guidance of domestication so as to achieve cultural equivalence when encountering this genre.This project is hoped to promote and complement the study of translation on humanities and contribute to its development as well as the depth of sino-foreign cultural exchange.
