On Subtitle Translation Of English Documentaries From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

In 2008,the National Geographic Channel launched the documentary of Megastructure,which attracts great attention from the audience both at home and abroad.Owing to the language barrier,Chinese audience needs to turn to the subtitle translation so as to understand the English version of this documentary.Compared with the subtitle translation of foreign films and plays,documentary subtitle translation is more professional and more demanding for translation qualities.Therefore,it is necessary to study documentary subtitle translation.Eco-translatology,put forward by Prof.Hu Gengshen,has acquired a lot of remarkable achievements in recent ten years.Eco-translatology takes Darwin's “Natural Selection” and “Survival of Fittest”,and Chinese ecological civilization wisdom as the theoretical basis,systematically exploring the translating process from the perspective of Eco-holism.Eco-translatology regards translation as a “community” of translation ecology that made up of translational environment,translation text and translator.According to Eco-translatoloty,translation is a process that translators make a series of adaptation and selection to fit the translational eco-environment;the translation strategies involves three dimensional transformations,which are linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions;and the translation quality is determined by translation's Degree of Holistic Adaption and Selection.Eco-translatology is a new research field that put forward by Chinese scholar,which provides a different perspective for translation research.The application of Eco-translatology to documentary subtitle translation study is a new area to be explored.Using Eco-translatology as the theoretical framework and taking the Chinese version of Megastructure as an example,the thesis expounds and analyzes translator's adaptive selection from linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions to verify the significance of Eco-translatology in subtitle translation and its feasibility in translation practice for higher quality translation.This research hopes to make a modest contribution to the documentary subtitle translation,and offer a supplement for the research perspective of documentary subtitle translation as well.
