Once upon A Bite is a high-quality cultural documentary on food, focusing on the abundant Chinese food culture. In 2019,this documentary won the Best Documentary Award from China Federation of Radio and Television Association, and it has not yet been translated into English.Through the subtitle translation and this report, the translator strives to promote the international dissemination of Once upon A Bite, allowing more target audiences to understand and accept Chinese food. The translator selects three episodes from Once upon A Bite as translation materials with authenticity and artistry.Based on the characteristics of the documentary subtitle and the constraints of subtitle translation, the translator chooses Eco-translatology to guide the translation practice and completes this report. In Eco-translatology,translation is the translator's selective activity to adapt to the translational eco-environment.In the translation process, the translator should adapt to the translational eco-environment of the source text, and select an ideal target text,so that it can survive in the new language environment. This report is divided into the following five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction to the background information, significance, translation processes of the practice and the framework of the report. In the second chapter, the translator analyzes features of the source text from the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. The third chapter reviews the theory basis,Eco-translatology,and its applicability in the documentary subtitle translation. The fourth chapter is about case analysis. In this part, the translator combines the constraints of subtitle translation and synchronism of pictures and sound, and summarizes specific translation methods for the corresponding textual features. At the linguistic level, the translator respectively applies reductive paraphrase, literal translation and amplification to deal with the large number of four-character phrases,non-subject sentences and the sentences without logic connectives;at the cultural level, the translator mainly takes literal translation, free translation, transliteration and literal translation plus transliteration to convert the variety of dish names, place names and Chinese culture-specific terms;at the communicative level, deletion and free translation are applied to translate the repetitive expressions and the poetic sentences with rich connotations;the fifth chapter is the summary of the inspirations and limitations in the translation practice.Under the guidance of Eco-translatology,the translator has completed the translation practice and report, providing some ideas and methods for the subtitle translation of food documentaries. The translator hopes that this practice can transplant Once upon A Bite into English cultural environment and promote the dissemination of Chinese food culture.
