This work analyzes Chinese soft power in the current time while providing certain insight for the future. Soft Power has been recognized as being important to China in numerous instances and is generally sought by most countries. Soft power is the outside attraction of a nation generated by that nation’s culture, policies and ideology, and institutions in which it created or takes part in. Yet these are large categories that need to be broken down to be useful. This work on Chinese soft power breaks down the categories of culture, ideology, and institutions into the multiple smaller components of traditional culture, event hosting, tourism, film, news media, education, and diplomacy. One specific question being investigated in each section is China’s ability to gain attraction towards itself from other nations within each of these fields. The findings of this comprehensive examination show that China is very rich in soft power reserves but has only developed some of them into active sources. This thesis then goes to show how some of those reserves are being developed, and predicts that along with that development Chinese soft power will flourish.
