This thesis is a cultural book translation report. The original book is collected by Luo Jia Xiu(the Yi language version),and translated by Ji Ge A Jia(the Yi language and Chinese version). As the author researched, Ma Mu Te Yi has no English version published until now. This book covers the contents of family ethics, social order and the philosophy of life, which has provided a very useful case for study. Its main purpose is to teach people to be good, to guide Yi people to live a life that accords with the Yi’s traditional social morality standard. The author chooses from chapter three to chapter seven as translation project materials. The author hopes to trans late this famous Yi traditional moral classic work into English to show the unique cultures to the world. Meanwhile it also helps to understand each other, strengthen national unity and promote international exchanges and cooperation.During translation, under the guidance of the communicative translation and semantic translation theories, the author tries to translate the book faithfully and meet the expression habits of target language combined with certain translation methods and strategies, like transliteration, literal translation, free translation, and amplification. The practical report describes the whole process of translation, discusses the translation project’s background, aim, significance and the preparation before translating. It also discusses the translation methods and strategies of difficulties in translation, and selects some examples to make an analysis. At last, the report summarizes the limitations of the translation and the gains from the translating. Through the translation practice, the author concludes that when translating cultural text like this, not only sound language ability and skillful translating techniques are needed, but the comprehension and mastery of both cultures matters more.
