Consecutive interpreting has been involved in every walk of life. Whether an international conference or negotiation can go smoothly relies on the quality of the interpretation to a great extent. Textual coherence is an important factor that influences the interpreting quality. This paper is a report on the Chinese-English simulated consecutive interpreting of classroom lecture "Jiangnan", which is mainly guided by the coherence theory. The lecture was given on October 27th,2014 by Professor Teng Lanhua who comes from Ethnology and Sociology of Guangxi University for Nationalities. This theory proposes that textural coherence can be achieved through the semantic and functional linking of componential elements in the discourse. Lexical cohesion and discourse coherence are the major means to the realization of coherence at the lexical level and discourse level. Besides, the author pays special attention to the interpretation of culture-loaded terms and segments in pre-task preparation and on-the-spot interpreting. This report analyzes the typical cases from the perspective of the coherence theory, and discusses the means to improve the coherence of the rendering mainly from the aspects of lexical cohesion and structural connection. What’s more, this report also provides an in-depth analysis of the culture-loaded terms and segments. Finally, this report summarizes the problems and experiences drawn from this simulative consecutive interpreting task, and proposes some suggestions on how to improve the coherence of the output in the target language and how to translate cultural-loaded poems and lyrics.
