Ancient Chinese court music always observes the traditional composition idea of "poetry before music". But it was greatly changed between the Wei-jin period and the Liu-song era of Nan Dynasty. The ideas of "poetry before music" and "sound before articulation" started co-existed in the composition of ancient Chinese music since then. This paper explores the composition ideas of court music in the Liu-song era of Nan Dynasty and has the following plot:after reading and analyzing the relevant literary materials, this paper will put its focus on the transformation of court music from the Qin Dynasty to the Liu-song era of Nan Dynasty. It also charts the main principles of ancient court music composition and then, through the analysis of the court music in the Liu-song era of Nan Dynasty, proposes the origins of such a transformation.This paper is composed of three parts:The first part is the literature review of the existing research and the introduction of research methodology and argument.The second part can be categorized into three chapters. The first chapter introduces the history of the court music before the Liu-song era of Nan Dynasty, as well as the development of court music between the Zhou Dynasty and the Wei-jin Period. It will also touch upon the composition principles of court music in the Qin and Han Dynasties.The second chapter introduces the development of court music in the Liu-song era of Nan Dynasty based upon the exploration of court music in the Liu-song and court music categorization, to which this chapter will give a clear charting.The third chapter explores, in details, the court music composition in the Liu-song era of Nan Dynasty, which is divided into two parts. This chapter will analyse the composition of court music from the Qin Dynasty to the Liu-song era, from the perspectives of prose and music composition, in order to explore the styles and characteristics of court music composition.The third part is the conclusion, in which the author will generalize the reasons of the transformation of court music between the Qin Dynasty and the the Liu-song era of Nan Dynasty.
