Introduction to literary Chinese is a Chinese textbook written by J.J.Brandt(1869-1944), who is a Russian expert on literary Chinese study. This book is based on written Chinese teaching and its subject is junior learners or learners who are able to speak a little Chinese. The thesis recognizes and analyzes Brandt’s teaching from the perspectives of vocabulary, function words and sentence patterns,so that objective, evaluation can be drawn.The first chapter is the introduction. This part tells significance, and subject,status at home and abroad, theoretical framework and methodology, source of utterance materials, and finally, life and works of Brant.The second chapter focuses on the arrangement and analysis of vocabulary in Introduction to Literary Chinese. This book collects 4268 new words, readers can find common usage and special usage of main notional words involving nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The book also includes polyphonic words and variant characters which frequently appear in written Chinese and are teaching difficulties. The words chose out are very practical and close to actual life, and cover various fields.The third chapter arranges and studies the function words in Introduction to Literary Chinese. This book focuses on teaching function words, besides 19 grammatical points. This book has a detailed explanation of function words “以(yi)”,“之(zhi)”,“者(zhe)”and “所(suo)”, among this four words,“之(zhi)”and“以(yi)”are most frequently used.The fourth chapter organizes and studies the sentence patterns in Introduction toLiterary Chinese. This book shows a comprehensive structural forms of passive sentence, declarative sentence and comparative sentence. In addition, Brandt explained each sentence patterns with abundant examples. However, he didn’t explain the usage, which may require improvements.The fifth chapter is conclusion. This part concludes the advantages and disadvantages in written Chinese teaching.
