Folklore Interpretation Of The Couplet In Yi County

The couplet is made up of two sentences, which sentence has the same number, the same pause, the same part of speech, and the coordinate level and oblique tones. Huizhou is located in mountainous area, which has beautiful landscape. The Huizhou culture rises in the southern song dynasty period, and to the top during the Ming and Qing dynasty. In Yi County, the geographical environment and the simple human environment makes its folk and culture. Yi County is a representative area in Huizhou region. In this paper, we choose Yi County to be research object, intend to discuss folk connotation in the couplet.The couplet in Yi County can be found in many buildings, such as ancient bridges, temple, tea pavilion and so on. In the long history, the couplet is closely related to life in Yi County. Our research is not limited to the text, the carving brushwork, we need reduction culture, politic, economy at the time and in that place. We believe the couplet is fresh history. If Huizhou culture is microcosm of the ancient Chinese culture, we can say the couplet culture is the enrichment of Huizhou culture.We choose fieldwork and literature research. I went alone to Yi County, chose Xidi, Hongcun, Nanping, Guanlu, Pingshan to be my field site. In addition, I red many monographs and literatures about couplet. At last, I will analyze from multiple perspectives.This paper divides into six parts. The first part is introduction. It mainly introduces three aspects of content, origin of topic selection, research of status about couplet, and research methods. The origin of topic selection comes from my passion of Huizhou culture and I am familiar with Yi County. Under the guidance of my mentor, I did my writing.The second part is an overview of Yi County. Huizhou is located in the southern Anhui. Yi County territory preserved more than 3900 ancient dwellings, ancient ancestral temples.The third part of this passage is about classification and characteristic of couplet in Yi County. I divided the couplet in Yi County into two categories—couplet in public space and in private space. Then I divided couplet in public place into several parts, and divided couplet in private place into two parts—couplet in Huizhou merchants’home, and couplet in officials’home. I summed the characteristics of couplet up in three points—rich subject matter, distributed widely, and delicate manual work.The fourth part is the cultural connotation of Yi County. Firstly, we can realize economic folk custom from couplet. Yi County gives priority to pure agriculture and forestry. They started a business in the early years of the Qing dynasty. Secondly, clan society leaves a mark on couplet. Clan society has a long history. The xin neo-confucianism impacts the couplet. Scholars in Huizhou believe in xin neo-confucianism as code of conduct. Fourthly, I found that village layout, ceremony in life, folk language, they are all related to couplet.Last part talked about enlightenment of couplet in Yi County, this article obtains from the six aspects—couplet in Yi County reflects education concept of farming and reading, Huizhou merchants conveyed skills through couplet, they treated filial piety in couplet as specification in clan society, couplet maintained residents life, people used couplet as public opinion tool to make the specification.
