Metaphors In Economic News Reports

As the subject of translation, the translator assumes a most active role in the execution of translation. In the eyes of the traditional translation theories, the translator was secondary and its subjective role has, in the majority of cases, been marginalized in the realm of translation endeavors. As of the 1970 s when translation studies experienced a shift of focus onto culture in the western translation society, the scope of translation research started to broaden, which led to more and more limelight thrown upon the translator’s subjectivity. Such new translation theories as Feminism Theory, Skopos Theory and the Manipulation Theory have not only realized the translator’s creativity in translation but also placed a great emphasis on the performance of the translator’s subjectivity and thus providing relevant researches with a firm theoretical foundation. The translator’s subjectivity is manifested throughout the entire activity of translation and that the translation of metaphors in the economic news is no exception.Metaphor is an indispensible rhetorical device in both Chinese and English economic news. The metaphors in the economic news are largely mapped from other domains. Based on the author’s research, the translation of metaphor in the economic news has been discussed in many papers and yet few of them have concentrated on this matter from the angle of the translator’s subjectivity. On account of this, the thesis aims to offer a detailed look into the translation of metaphors in the economic news from the perspective of the translator’s subjectivity.It is the author’s observation that the translator’s subjectivity including the translation purpose, cultural awareness and reader awareness has a great bearing on the choice of translation strategies. The significance of this thesis mainly consists in two aspects: first and foremost, the investigation of the metaphor translation from the perspective the translator’s subjectivity has opened a new window of opportunity to the study of metaphor translation on the whole; secondly, the achievement of the present attempt has lent credence to the feasibility of the diversity of translation strategies of metaphors in the economic news from the standpoint of the translator’s subjectivity.As far as methodology is concerned, the author adopts the descriptive method to elaborate on the variety of metaphors and their corresponding translation strategies displayed in the environment of the economic news. When it comes to spelling out how the translators’ subjectivity is demonstrated in the translation strategies of metaphors, the author employs the analytical means. What needs to be pointed out is that the motivation of scrutinizing different translation strategies of metaphors in the economic news lies not in debating over which strategy is preferable but in accentuating the paramount position that the translator occupies in the translating practice of metaphors in the economic news.
