Translation On UN Documents

China, as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, plays an important role. Chinese, as one of the six working languages, is widely used. UN’s unique role as the most important international organization results that all of its resolutions, drafts, and policies are released in different languages, the translation of which is undoubtedly very important.UN Documents, as one kind of official documents, though, is different from normal official documents for its readers have different background in terms of language, culture and politics. Based on the confirmation of text characteristics, this paper makes a study on the translation of UN Documents(Humanism Documents). During the process of translation, the author found that, though they were non-literary translation, it’s not easy to do a perfect job; we must pay due attention to:(1) translation of terminology;(2) translation of long sentences and(3) language expression. So, the author implements a case study on these documents in order to explore the difficult points. Based on functional equivalence theory, this paper adopts different strategies such as consulting parallel texts; separating a long sentence into several shorter parts and rearranging sentence, etc. The author summarizes several feasible translation methods, and hopes that this paper could offer some useful tips to guide the similar translation practice.
