A Consecutive Interpreting Practical Report On The Political Television Documentary “The Dream Of The Century, The Dream Of China”

As a Chinese to English consecutive interpreting(C-E CI), this report selects the full-length CCTV political television documentary “The Dream of the Century, the Dream of China” as the subject. The author selects the first, the fourth and the fifth series of this television documentary as the text objects for detailed case analysis. The report is based on the comparison analysis on the two phases of consecutive interpreting of the same material, which are “unprepared interpreting” and “prepared interpreting”. After referring to relevant articles and papers, the report gives a detailed description of this consecutive interpreting practice. Combined with specific examples, the author analyzes the difficulties and problems in her interpreting and puts forward the corresponding solutions.The report is divided into three parts:In introduction, the author gives a brief introduction of the television documentary “The Dream of the Century, the Dream of China”. She also talks about the difficulties and significance in interpreting this material.The main body of this report is the second part which consists of three chapters.The first chapter is task description. In this part, the author lists the goals of this interpreting task and the arrangement she has made to carry out this interpreting task successfully.The second chapter is process description, which mainly describes the two phases of interpreting. The first phase focuses on the introduction of “unprepared” consecutive interpreting on “The Dream of the Century, the Dream of China”. Then, the interpreter gives a preliminary summary about the problems that arise in the process of this “unprepared interpreting”.The second phase of interpreting is “prepared interpreting”. Based on the former unprepared interpreting, this part first states the preparatory work of the interpreter, including the preparation on the theme, preparation on the terms, and the analysis of audience composition. Going through the same procedure of consecutive interpreting, the author makes a general assessment of the second-time consecutive interpreting according to the following three aspects: the allocation of attention, the quality of interpreting and the unforeseeable factors that arise during the interpreting process.The third chapter is case analysis which is the essence of the report. Centered on the two phases of interpreting, the report does thorough studies and analysis of the problems combined with some specific examples. In this chapter, the interpreter makes an in-depth analysis with regard to the following three levels: the words and phrases, sentences and note-taking.Firstly, given words and phrases, it discusses how to interpret the same adjectives frequently used in the source language and how to interpret the typical Chinese culture-loaded words. Secondly, considering the sentences, it talks about the “Source Language Principle” in interpreting long sentences in the source language and how to interpret the Chinese parallel structure. Thirdly, on the part of note-taking, it lists the interpreter’s weak points in taking notes and puts forward the solutions to improve the interpreter’s note-taking by comparing the notes written down during the interpreting process.In conclusion, in the final part of this report, the interpreter reflects on the whole interpreting practice and summarizes the lessons and experience she has learned through this practice.
