"Nothing is trifle when it is related to a country’s diplomacy" is always an important guideline diplomats abide by in their diplomatic practices. And interpreting for foreign affairs is an indispensable part of diplomacy. Therefore, it is essential to provide interpreting for foreign affairs with a valid theoretical support so that its efficiency and appropriateness can be lifted. By analyzing and comparing the record of the press conference and the record of an interpreting imitation, listing out the Translation Variation Theory with its supporting strategies and observing examples of translation variation, this paper connects Translation Variation Theory with interpreting for foreign affairs. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the practical translation variation strategies that can be applied to interpreting for foreign affairs. This paper holds that there are three practical strategies in translation variation theory that can be applied, namely, addition, deletion and explanatory translation. Then, this paper provides a conclusion of the suitable situations where these three strategies can be applied. Addition can be used when the source text naturally omits certain information that is indispensable for the target text listener to have a clear understanding. Deletion is a practical strategy when unnecessary information, especially those unnecessary culture-loaded words, comes up in the source text so that time can be saved. Explanatory translation can be used when the target text do not have an appropriate replacement for the culture-loaded words in the source text and when those words are confusing and difficult to translate if translated literally.
