The Comparison Study On The Conjecture Modality Adverb "Xiangbi" And "Xianglai"

This thesis intensively compares and analyzes the differences between "Xiangbi"(想必)and "Xianglai"(想来),through the way from combining synchronic description and diachronic comparison. This thesis makes an investigation on the subtle differences between them and the reason of their long-term coexistence on the synchronic level, forming mutual corroboration of semantic, syntactic and pragmatic aspects. Meanwhile, we reveal the evolution and trajectory of them on the synchronic level, and elucidate the deep motivation of their differences. There are six chapters in this thesis:Chapter One, the exordium, make a detailed introduction of research content, research Significance and research achievement of predecessors. Meanwhile, make a brief description of theoretical basis, research methods and the sources of corpus. Since predecessors’s research on "Xiangbi"(想必)and "Xianglai"(想来)is only scattered in the discussion of other issues, the multi-angle and in-depth comparative research between them is indispensable.Chapter Two summarize the similarities and differences between "Xiangbi"(想必)and "Xianglai"(想来)basing on semantic feature, semantic background semantic orientation, semantic background, degree of semantic certainty aspects. Firstly, we generalize and complement their semantic feature on the basis of the different definitions of dictionary. Secondly, the tendency differences on semantic background and the situations of the semantic orientation are compared by this part. Last but not least, we point out their differences on the degree of semantic certainty.Chapter Three, we make the syntactic comparison on the aspect of syntactic distribution, ability of combination, collocation and co-occur, forming an outside-inside verification with the chapter Two.Chapter Four illuminate the different pragmatic value of "Xiangbi"(想必)and "Xianglai"(想来)in terms of style distribution and pragmatic function. The different uses in formal and informal style and the developments of their pragmatic function is also discussed in this part.Chapter Five mainly discuss the different development direction of "Xiangbi"(想必)and "Xianglai"(想来)from the perspective of diachronic in order to provide explanation for synchronic differences. On the one hand, we analyze the lexicalization process of "Xiangbi" basing on transplanar non-syntactic structure and also explore the mechanis and motivation of the process. On the other hand, summarize the lexicalization and grammaticalization process of "Xianglai" as well as the mechanisms and motivation of it’s process.The last Chapter, conclusion, sum up the results of the discussion in an all-around way and point out what this thesis lacks and where the further research is needed.
