Simultaneous Interpretation Of 2013 APEC CEO Summit From The Perspective Of Linear Rendition

The principle of linear rendition, or syntactic linearity, is a hard and fast principle in simultaneous interpretation in light of the linguistic differences between Chinese and English, and its use minimizes the task of the interpreter’s tension in listening and speaking while facilitating his information processing to ensure a smooth translation process. This paper attempts to solve concrete problems in the case of 2013 APEC CEO Summit under the guidance of this principle. Daniel Gile’s Effort Model is taken as a reference in analyzing the three major obstacles, namely, sentences with postpositive attributes, postpositive adverbials, and postpositive subjects. Through the analysis of cases, these three major difficult points are addressed by: 1) the use of punctuation in prepositions or prepositional phrases, relational words, infinitives, and participles; 2) the use of repetition, amplification, simplification, and conversion for better coherence. It is hoped that this case study would provide considerable inspiration and guide for later simultaneous interpretation.
