As the Chinese become increasingly popular in the world, the demand of teaching Chinese as a foreign language is increasingly urgent. As the most practical skill, speaking has a vital role for communication. Therefore, how to improve the quality of spoken language teaching, how to enhance the effect of oral expression, and how to cultivate the competence of communication are urgent issues that the international Chinese teachers must solve.In 1990s, task-based language teaching has been introduced into China. However, this method attracted wide attention in the English teaching field at first. Later, it developed and spread to foreign language teaching field. Task-based language teaching means that, in the second language teaching, teachers combine language teaching with language application of daily life according to the specific teaching objectives, so that learners acquire language in the process of completing tasks. In recent years, this young teaching method gradually attracted the majority of scholars and Chinese teachers’ attention.In this thesis, I first made a brief research about task-based language teaching theory, which includes the definitions, theoretical foundations, teaching principles and characteristics. Then I analyzed the current situation of intermediate spoken Chinese from two aspects:the integral curricula condition and the whole teaching circumstance. And finally, I deeply researched the application of task-based language teaching theory in intermediate spoken Chinese, which contains the brief introduction of my class, the detailed instructional design of Lesson 3-Hometown in "Developing Chinese Intermediate Speaking Course (Ⅰ)", as well as the summary and reflection about my instructional design. I hope the instructional design which combines theory with practice can offer some effective guidance to intermediate spoken Chinese. Specifically, this design aims at clearing teaching objectives, determining the teaching tasks, motivating learners’enthusiasm, initiative and creativity, improving teaching and learning environment, and helping learners to improve their communicative language level ultimately.
