A Study On TV Simultaneous Interpreting Strategies From The Perspective Of Effort Model

TV simultaneous interpreting(SI)refers to the process of transferring source language into target language in live TV broadcast.Compared with conference SI,TV SI has more difficulties in efforts allocating and it has extensive audience scope.The addressors' debate is very ardent,which needs higher TV SI efforts allocating requirements and lets interpreters make more errors.Therefore,the study on TV debate SI is valuable.The researching subject of this study is TV SI of 2016 second US presidential debate and the research materials are from two live TV SI videos in stations CTV and VO A.Two interpreters' interpreting contents have been transferred into texts which include about 20,000 words respectively.By contrasting two TV SI versions,this paper analyzes interpreters' live TV SI performance by describing and contrasting methods based on Effort Model to point out interpreter's errors in TV SI,factors analysis of these errors and put forward some TV SI strategies.The findings of study are divided into four parts:(1)The ardent debate,its fast speed,large amounts of information and interpreter's failure of catching addressors' meaning will generate interpreter's loss of information,erroneous interpreting and slips of tongue.(2)The high information density can easily cause interpreter's processing capacity requirements overload.(3)The interpreting quality from CTV is superior to the version from VOA on the whole,(4)The interpreters from two TV stations made many mistakes in interpreting production,such as erroneous interpreting and loss of information.The research points out two aspects ideas:(1)The factors of interpreting errors include high density of information accepting,knowledge insufficiency of interpreter,complicated cognitive processing,hard efforts distribution and the overload of information processing,which generate interpreter's problems.(2)Short-term and long-term preparations before interpreting can decrease interpreter's overload in the aspects of listening and memory effort;the anticipation and changing Ear-Voice Span can lesson listening effort overload;syntactic linearity can spare more time for memory effort processing capacity and add production effort;complementary interpreting,omitting information,replacement of super-ordinate terms and interpreting simplification can help reduce production overload;proper time using of L,M and P,economic principle using and using the help from broadcasting room are conducive to reducing coordination effort.
