In recent years, the western country, particularly the US, has highlighted thedevelopment of the STEM, which refers to science, technology, engineering andmathematics. The idea of STEM was put forward by the American government. Inorder to improve national engineering ability and innovation ability of science andtechnology, the United States has implemented many policies, especially theeducation policy and curriculum choices in schools to support the development ofSTEM, which has a great influence on workforce development, national securityconcerns and immigration policies. Based on the Inclusive Excellence, which is thetheme of the2013Public Affairs Conference at Missouri State University, Dr.Freeman Hrabowski gave a lecture entitled Creating a Climate of Success for AllStudents in STEM, which is rich with opportunities to engage the campus communityin discussions that will help to clarify the complications we all face as we reachbeyond borders. In this lecture, Dr. Freeman focuses on best practices for creatingboth a culture of inclusive excellence and a climate of success for all the students inSTEM.This retrospective report is based on the simulated practice of English to Chineseconsecutive interpreting (E-C CI for short) of the lecture given by Dr. FreemanHrabowski. After the preparations in terms of terminology collection, personnelassignments and auxiliary devices, the simulated E-C CI practice began, during whichthe author encountered many difficulties which mainly resulted from the speaker’s useof slang words, technical terms as well as his accent. After the simulated practice, theauthor carefully listened to and transcribed the record, which is extremelytime-consuming. After that, the problems encountered in the simulated interpretingprocess were systematically analyzed and some practical countermeasures wereproposed which were as follows:1) The literal translation for sentences which werenot heard very clearly;2) The free translation for some difficult slang words;3) Note-taking to aid short term memory;4) Accumulating cultural knowledge to helpbetter accomplish the interpreting task. At last, the author summarized the simulatedE-C CI practice, with the aim of improving interpreting abilities for future interpretingtasks.
