With globalization going on, the exchange between China and other countries becomesmore frequent. English, a lingua franca, gradually becomes an important bridge ofcommunication among different countries all over the world. And it also makes Chinaintegrate into the world in a broader way. Against this background, simultaneousinterpretation is needed more at various meetings. When it comes to large conferences, simultaneous interpretation is especially indispensible. At present, China is experiencing thefourth wave of translation. And the research toward simultaneous interpretation has madesome achievements.Simultaneous interpretation, with the characteristics of accuracy, timeliness and rapidity,is limited in terms of time, speed, accent, etc. Thereupon, interpreters should know betterabout these characteristics and limiting factors and use right translation methods and skillsunder the guidance of scientific theory when coming to simultaneous interpretation. Thispaper introduces a new translation theory, that is the Theory of Adaptation. This theoryincludes seven adaptive methods, which are increase, deletion, edition, formulation, reduction, combination and change. This paper also discusses how these methods are used insimultaneous interpretation. Proceeding from the Theory of Adaptation under the direction ofSkopos Theory, some practical and viable methods and techniques are expected to beproposed in this paper by analyzing the simultaneous interpretation materials used at variousconferences. With an example of the Speech by Mr. Wang Qishan, Vice Premier of the StateCouncil, P. R. China at the International Investment Forum2008, this paper will explore howthe adaptive methods of the Theory of Adaptation can direct simultaneous interpretation.Hopefully it can offer some help for those engaged in interpretation. And what can besummed up from this paper are as follows:First, the adaptive methods, if applied properly, are undoubtedly quite useful tosimultaneous interpretation.Second, interpreters should select one or more kinds of adaptive methods according tothe real conditions when needed and use them flexibly.Third, with the help of the adaptive methods of the Theory of Adaptation, interpreterscan have more freedom to make their own decisions when translating. But this doesn’t meanthat interpreters can fabricate information out of nothing or use these methods in an excessiveway. Instead, what interpreters need to do is to keep these methods within a certain limit, thatis, not to get away from the original text.
