This paper takes the natural images as the study objects. From the perspective of theinfluences of both Chinese and western cultures, and by the interpretation of those naturalimages, it aims to find out the cultural elements which lie in Gu Cheng’s poems. As aresult, this paper is going to make a deeper study of Gu’s works in the aspects of theircultural connotations, aesthetic features as well as the great contributions that Gu, the keyfigure of misty poets, has made.Besides the introduction and conclusion, there are going to be three chapters. Thefirst chapter starts from “life” and “death”, and by the way of close reading, in thecombination of the influences of both Chinese and western cultures, through the analysisof the natural images in Gu’s works, it tries to find out the philosophical ethics, histhinkings and feelings toward life. The second chapter focuses on the characteristics ofthose natural images, namely suggestibility, polysemy and originality. Those traits showhis diverse writing skills that combine with the essence of both Chinese and westernpoetry. The last part, Chapter three, through the artistic conception which created by thenatural images, it points out that there are two kinds of styles in Gu’s poetry, namelyclassical style and modern style. On the one hand, there is obscure and misty conception inGu’s poetry, therefore they are called “classical”; on the other hand, as a modern poet,Gu’s works incline to the modern style that contains the natural style, which is similar tothe fairy tales, and also the absurd style, which is obscure and abstract. The conclusion part is to give a comment on the constructive role that Gu has playedin the poetic development of the New era. In addition, it is going to point out the reasonwhy Gu can stick to his creative writing, and it will make an explanation of the modernitythat lies in his works.
