The Application Of Simplification Principle In C-E Simultaneous Interpretation

Since its first public appearance in "Paris Peace Conference" of1919, simultaneous interpretation enjoys over90years history. However, the "Nuremberg Trial" made people realize its advantages, which are quick and clear, take less time and greatly shorten the process of the convention. Afterwards, simultaneous interpretation is widely used in UN and other international conferences. With the improvement of China’s comprehensive national strength and its international status, Chinese language is becoming more important in the world. Meanwhile, with its more frequent use in the international conventions and all kinds of international exchanges, high quality Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation is playing a more significant role in conveying information to the outside world and showing the national image.With the personal interpreting practice, the author finds a phenomenon in Chinese-English interpretation that the target language always costs more time than the source language. To keep the completeness of the information, the interpreter has to accelerate speed to keep up with the speaker, which makes the interpreter’s speaking speed influenced by the speaker, and leaves a great psychological pressure to the interpreter; as a result it greatly influences the quality of simultaneous interpretation and the understanding of the audiences. Adopting the simplification strategies will help ease the interpreter’s pressure, strengthen the rhythm of interpretation and improve its quality. Therefore, the author holds the view that the simplification principle should be abided by in the process of Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation.With the personal practice of Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation as the case study and Gile’s effort model’as the theoretical basis, the author analyzed how to achieve the conciseness in Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation through the strategy of omission, generalization and simplification and came to the conclusion that the simplification principle should be abided by in simultaneous interpretation.
