Chu Ci is one of origins of Chinese poetry, even Chinese culture. It is also the treasure of world culture. It breaks down the form of Shi Jing and greatly enriches the expression of Shi Jing, exerting a profound influence on the formation and creation of poems in later periods. However, compared with Shi Jing, the translation study and the publicity of Chu Ci largely behind.Image, as an important cultural component in Chinese classics, exists extensively in Chinese poetry. In Chu Ci, there are various and intricate images which are of special meanings. Thus, in the process of translating Chu Ci, the appropriate handling and translation of these images are rather essential and important. This thesis tries to make the contrastive studies on the English versions of Xu Yangchong and Yang Xianyi, mainly on the translation of cultural images in their versions from the perspective of domestication and foreignization. The thesis concludes that the single application of domestication or foreignization is inadvisable. Only by using both these strategies can the original text be conveyed in a proper way. This thesis starts with a brief review of studies on the translation research of Chu Ci at home and abroad, and then with a specific analysis of cultural images. Based on domestication and foreignization, and from the perspective of mythology, nature and society, by comparing the versions of Xu Yangchong, Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes, there are contrastive studies on the translation of cultural images in Chu Ci so as to reveal the similarities and differences between the translation strategy.
