Causal Factors And Coping Strategies Of The Interpreter’s Effort Imbalance In The Light Of Gile’s Effort Model

With its particular operation mode and inherent rules,interpreting has been studied by experts based on sociolinguistics,psycholinguistics,cognitive science,and so on since the last century.Daniel Gile,a world famous interpreter and professor of University Lumiere Lyon Ⅱ,proposed his Effort Model on the findings of cognitive science.His division of consecutive interpreting into two phases provides continuous guidance for interpreting.This report adopts Gile’s Effort Model as a theoretical foundation to examine problems encountered in the author’s interpreting task and provides coping strategies tentatively.Firstly,the author gives an introduction to and description of the entire interpreting process,and then provides strategies after specific case analysis.Finally,the author concluded that besides good source language and target language proficiency,good practice of interpreting strategies is essential to the task accomplishment.Good task performance requires a balanced distribution of efforts on the part of the interpreter,such as "Listening and Analysis Effort","Note-taking Effort","Short-term Memory Effort",and"Coordination Effort",and these can be improved and made perfect through practice.Through training and experience accumulation,an interpreter can overcome effort imbalance,reduce risks,and ensure success with interpreting tasks.Interpreting is a complicated process that requires in-depth study and continuous exploration.The report-author hopes that the analysis of "Effort Model" in this report will provide a reference for would-be interpreters to realize the importance of efforts distribution and make progress on their path to interpreting.
