Interpreting is a communicative activity which is cross-linguistic andintercultural. Unlike translation, it demands better memory storage competence, psychological quality and cognitive knowledge from interpreters. Both simultaneousinterpreting and consecutive interpreting are complicated cognitive processes limitedby time and space, including a series of activities such as the reception of the sourcelanguage, the comprehension of information, code conversion as well as theexpression of the target language. This series of complex cognitive processes, however, exist in human’s mind, unable to be explained simply by theories inLinguistics. Cognitive science has provided a new way to illustrate the process ofinterpreting soundly and scientifically.Daniel Gile, an eminent interpreting scholar and practitioner proposed, from theperspective of cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics, the Effort Models ofconsecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting. It helps explain thecomplicated interpreting process neatly and concisely, supplying us with a theoreticalfoundation to understand profoundly the inner thinking process of such cognitiveactivity. Therefore, it is of extreme significance for us to explore the effort model andanalyze causes of effort imbalance, so as to increase the quality of interpreting. In the first part of the paper, the author gives a brief introduction to the EffortModel of SI, and then applies it to analyze several reasons leading to effort imbalanceof an interpreter in the process of simultaneous interpreting. The author raises somerelated coping strategies based on the previous discussion, hoping to help achieve theefficient distribution of effort needed in SI.
