The Impact Of Accent On Interpreter’s Performance In Simultaneous Interpretation And Coping Strategies

Guided by the "Effort Model" proposed by Daniel Gile, this paper aims to prove that under most conditions, accent is the problem trigger in simultaneous interpretation. Accent can arouse problem sequence, add difficulties to listening and understanding during simultaneous interpretation, increase the、pressure of interpreters and thus affect the quality of interpretation. The paper also proves, however, that the effects of accent to different interpreters are not equal. For some interpreters, the effect is small, sometimes can even be ignored.This paper is divided into two parts.Part one introduces the background, purpose and significance of this paper, study status quo on relevant themes in China and other countries, and the theoretical foundation of this paper, namely the "Effort Model" of Daniel Gile. Besides, this part also concludes the features of Indian English in pronunciation.Part two uses experimental research to prove that Indian English will affect the quality of simultaneous interpretation. In this part, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis are applied to analyze the results of the research. The quality of interpretation of the five interpreters is analyzed from three aspects, namely completeness, accuracy and fluency. Besides, questionnaire is conducted to study the psychological condition of the five interpreters. Based on the research results, some strategies are suggested to help the interpreter better handle simultaneous interpretation with Indian accent.
