This thesis chooses the conversation between the hosts and the guests in entertainment TV talk show Day Day Up as the research material to discover the turn-taking system, adjacency pair and repair system working in the program and how hosts and guests adopt turn-taking strategies to claim, hold and yield the turn during the talk.According to Seedhouse (2004), turn-taking, adjacency pairs and repair are main types of interactional organization in conversation analysis. Previous researches mainly focused on the analysis of turn-taking, ignoring data analysis of adjacency pairs and repair and their significant impact on turn-taking. Therefore, this thesis selects Day Day Up as a typical case of multi-party conversation to investigate the talk between hosts and guests by the approach of conversation analysis. The results show differences with previous studies and interpretation of the results is provided in the conclusion part. In previous studies, both hosts and guests use simple sentences during their speaking, and guests mostly wait for their turns to speak. In the present study, most of the turns by hosts are composed of words and simple sentences while most turns by the guests are simple and complex sentences. That’s because hosts play the role of leading the topic and casting questions or requirements while the guests are in charge of providing detailed information or telling their experiences or stories. As for turn-taking strategies, the hosts adopt turn-yielding strategies most, especially nomination, to give the floor to the guests, while the guests adopt turn-holding strategies, especially monologue, to give more details and avoid being interrupted. Among four typical adjacency pairs, question-answer type happens most. During the speech, when errors appear, repair system will be evoked to execute correction. Most of the time, errors are self-repair to guarantee the undergoing talk show. Therefore, it can be concluded that the difference in the speaking roles decides the current turn-taking situation, with the hosts being active and supportive and the guests being passive and cooperative.By studying the turn-taking system coded in the TV talk show Day Day Up, this thesis is expected to lead the audience better appreciate the charm of the TV talk show and contribute to future researches on conversation analysis of talk show.
