With the ongoing informatization across the world, increasingly frequent exchanges between different countries result in the growing ratio of technical text translation.Due to the importance of energy production in industrial development, translation of petroleum technical texts is becoming increasingly prominent. Therefore a high-quality translation text has direct impact on international readers' acquisition and understanding of the professional knowledge.Based on the translation practice conducted in the physical simulation platform of Liaoning Shihua University and guided by Newmark's communicative translation theory, this report explores the translation methods of technical texts.Technical texts, with highly specialized information, feature complex sentence structure and a variety of relationships between sentence constituents, which is a great challenge to translators.Based on the E-C translation of Handbook of Petroleum Refining Processes, with adequate preparation made before the translation, this report discusses how to select appropriate translation strategies to better translate terminologies and long sentences. When translating technical words, the translator needs to have a thorough understanding about their meanings. In terms of query and verification, the translator uses online pictures,Internet sites(including shopping sites and some companies' official website)and literature to verify the translation accuracy. When translating sentences the translator first makes a grammatical analysis and then makes clear the logic between clauses. In addition, after analyzing the features of long sentences and differences between the two languages, the translator puts forward appropriate translation methods such aslinear translation, adverse translation and division method in the hope of approaching the target readers in terms of semantics and patterns.
