With the deepening of mutual communication for countries in the world andChina’s reform and opening up, China increasingly needs more high quality talents withsolid professional knowledge and skills as well as proficiency in a foreign language.The higher vocational education is considered as an important type in the developmentof higher education and the scale has accounted for half of higher education. English,being a compulsory course in the higher vocational education, after ten years’development, is encountering many problems and challenges, although the greatachievements have been gained. In this paper, the author analyzes the characteristics ofhigher vocational education and higher vocational English teaching, finds out problemsexisted in English teaching in HVE in Shanxi province and elaborates the goal andimportance of this research, pointing out that this study makes up for the blank in theresearch of higher vocational English teaching in Shanxi Province, with a veryimportant practical significance. Under the guidance of constructivism, the authorutilizes the literature review method, questionnaire method, interview method and othertools to survey curriculum orientation, teaching mode, teaching assessment and Englishteacher development in English teaching in Shanxi province. Through the investigationand analysis, ambiguous orientation, traditional and outdated teaching mode, andunreasonable teaching evaluation, are common in higher vocational English teachingin Shanxi Province, moreover, teachers’ professional development far cannot meet theneeds of teachers themselves and the society’s development. In view of the aboveproblems, the researcher puts forward the reform measures of higher vocational Englishteaching:(1) English courses should be set to "GE+ECP+ESP" mode and teachingshould be oriented in career environment with strong practicality.(2) the teaching modeshould regard students as the main body, teacher as the leading factor, adopting thetask-based teaching method and project method.(3) the teaching evaluation should payattention to formative evaluation, in combination with other multivariate evaluationmethod.(4) teachers in higher vocational colleges should have the consciousness of self-development, actively carry out teaching research, conduct the teaching reflection toimprove, and strengthen the construction of "double type" teachers.
