Middlebury mode is a teaching mode used in Middlebury’s Summer Language Schools in the unites states. It is a teaching mode that differ from traditional audio-lingual method. At present, Middlebury mode’s immense influenced is proven by the fact that most Chinese teaching programs in China nowadays are more or less influenced by it. As the prevailing modeamong teaching modes of such category, it is a research topic with innegligible value. St udying Middlebury mode can accelerate the development of theories related to teaching Chine se as a foreign language, and can potentially be helpful to Chinese teaching programs in and o utside of China.This paper analyses Middlebury mode from both macro and micro point of views by picturing the foundation of a teaching mode. It studies Middlebury mode’s basis including core ideology, founding theories and education intentions, as well as its design and management of teaching, while it also explains details related to teaching strategies and practicing skills. It also summarizes the uniqueness of the teaching and administrative mode of Middlebury school, and points out what we can learn in our industry of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Middlebury pattern.
