Chinese teaching has a long history in the United States. From the beginning of Middlebury Chinese language summerschool,teaching circles have been exploring,establishing a school-running mode, which can improve the students’Chinese level quickly and effectively.Today,the success experience in education of Middlebury Chinese language summer school has been applied to many of the Chinese short-term intensive training project, and become a fixed teaching and management mode-the Middlebury mode, which services for the Chinese teaching. After years’ development,PIB,ACC,DSIC and other Chinese language projects have formed the distinctive teaching mode,which take Middlebury mode as a core."Duke study in China" program (DSIC) was set up ealier among all the chinese language program and was deeply influenced by the Middlebury model. It has absorbed the essence of the Middlebury mode,and developed an unique attractive characteristics at the same time in the actual teaching years,which becoming the influential representative in Chinese language projects. This paper plans to start from the definition of teaching mode, and analyze the teaching elements which constitutes the teaching mode, discuss the inheritance and development of DSIC teaching mode which is based on the Middlebury model.Meanwhile, this paper argues that teaching mode is not just a simple collection of the teaching elements, management also plays a very important role as an important support of the teaching mode throughout the teaching process. It is an important guarantee to the successful implementation of the project. So,this paper tries to take the basic teaching mode and the managementmode which cansupportthe teaching mode of DSIC as the focus, and study the DSICmode in the teaching and management perspective.There is also a comparison among DSIC,PIB and ACC. Finally,we can analyse the successful characteristics, limitations and development of DSIC and provide some suggestions for the project operation.This article is divided into four parts.The first part is an introduction including the significance of the topic, a review of related research topics, research methods and research contents. The second part is to analyse the basic teaching mode of DSIC, including the teaching object, teaching philosophy, curriculum setting, teaching method, use of materials, class teaching, language practice and the extracurricular activities.Then to compare with other Chinese language project, and summarize the characteristic and the deficiency of DSIC.The third part is to analyse themanagement mode which can supportthe teaching mode, including student management, teacher management and the teaching environment management which under the management framework of DSIC.Through the evaluation of DSIC managementmode,we can analyse the promote meaning of students’and teachers’ development, and put forward some suggestions to the project operation.The fourth part is about summary and conclusion.
