This paper focuses on Linguaphone Oriental Language Course, a Chinese textbook in the 1920s published by England Linguaphone Institute. Shu Chien Chun, who was then a lecturer in Chinese at the School of Oriental Studies, University of London and participated in compiling this textbook. This Chinese textbook was very popular from the 1920s to the mid-1950s. Many scholars have done some research into Shu Chien Chun’s teaching experience in London, for Shu Chien Chun, one of the editors, was a famous Chinese writer. However, few studies have paid attention to this textbook. The present study tries to focus on the textbook itself. Chapter One explains the reason of choosing the research, the significance of the research and the current situation. Chapter Two introduces Shu Chien Chun’s teaching experience at the School of Oriental Studies and then analyzes the teaching object and the arranging regulations. Chapter Three discusses the teaching method for this textbook. The unique teaching mode of this textbook achieved great success in the last century, and so the method in this textbook may provide some helpful suggestions for today’s Chinese teaching. Chapter Four analyzes the teaching characteristics of this textbook on phonetics, Chinese character, content and culture. The last chapter deals about the enlightenment of this textbook for the compiling of teaching materials for teaching Chinese as a foreign language today.
