Simultaneous interpreting is a complex chain of language information processing, which requires interpreters to coordinate the listening, comprehending, converting and producing output virtually at the same time as the speaker. Chinese conveys more information than English and it takes longer time for the output of English. The interpreters have to speed up to ensure the integrity of information in source language. However, Chinese language carries high-intensity information, which causes huge psychological pressure and cognitive load to the interpreters, thus impairing the quality of SI and misleading the audience. The application of translation strategies helps to solve the problem efficiently.This paper looks at the role of Gile’s Effort Model employed in the second-grade MTI students of Nanchang University for their Chinese into English simultaneous interpreting(SI)practice class. Four students are chosen under the study and their interpreting works have been recorded as data. Through a follow-up observation, the author intends to find out how students handled these simplification strategies based on Gile’s effort model and what effects these strategies have for the translation itself. Since SI is no longer a word to word substitution, instead it is considered to convey the key information of source language, the author hopes that this comparative, empirical study and its comprehensive analysis on the authentic samples will contribute to the training of interpreters.
