Selected E-C Translation Of/Do Not Come To You By Chance And A Critical Commentary

This translation report is based on the translation from Chapter One to Chapter Four of I Do Not Come to You by Chance, which was written by Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani. Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani is a Nigerian reporter and writer. When she lived in Nigeria, she signed a contract with an international publishing company for the first time in Nigerian history. The selected text is about the early life of Kingsley, which provides the background for the development of the plot. This novel tells not only about Kingsley’s life experience, but also about the relationship between Africa and the West.1This report is made up of two parts. Part One is the original text and translated text. Part Two is the critical commentary. This analysis is divided into four chapters. Chapter One is an introduction of the background knowledge of the novel and the significance of the translation project. In Chapter Two, Nida’s dynamic equivalence theory is introduced to provide a theoretical basis for the report. In Chapter Three, the translation methods used in the translation process are analyzed, including amplification, omission, conversion, four-character structure, semantic explication, division and inversion. In Chapter Four, the translator comes to a conclusion that because of the differences in thinking pattern, language logic and expression between Chinese and English, readers may be confused if the translator translates some expressions just according to their literal meaning. That is to say, if translators stick to the principles oriented toward formal equivalence, the translation will contain much that is not readily intelligible to the average readers, so the translator should render the novel under the principle oriented toward dynamic equivalence.There has been no Chinese version of the novel by now. The translator wants to introduce this great novel to Chinese readers. The translation of the novel will help Chinese readers better understand the history, politics and society of Nigeria and appreciate African literature.
