Through a comprehensive analysis of female images that appear in Jia Pingwa’s novels including Xiao Yue Qian Ben,Ji Wo Wa Ren Jia,Qin Qiang,Tumen,Gao Laozhuang and Dai Deng by taking the perspective of urbanization, this thesis tries to explore these women’s living situation and personality as well as their spiritual values in the context of China’s social transformation. Since the 1980 s, the urban sprawl has reduced the disparity between cities and countrysides, which also has made a huge impact on the development of rural areas. This theme, not surprisingly, was embodied in most works created by Jia Pingwa during 1980 s. His works mainly describe the changes of countrysides and farmers’ living conditions. By describing the countryside, his works show the problems encountered by China during the process of urbanization. and explore a solution to those problems. Jia Pingwa describe all kinds of characters. From this, we find that he is particularly concerned about the life and destiny of women by portraying female images. His works show females’ understanding to reality and meaning of life by describing females’ up-and-down life experiences and their character traits. This also embodies Jia Pingwa’s continuous thinking for the development of modern society during the process of his literary creation.Female image is one of the inseparable images in Jia Pingwa’s works. He doesn’t want to convey a certain purpose, neither to advocate feminism through the description of women. However, he describes women with very simple purpose to make the character more vivid and alive. Most previous studies of Jia’s works focus on the background of local literature. Little studies were conducted to analyze the female image from the perspective of urbanization against the present background of social development. Therefore, it is of great necessity to explore the female image from the view of urbanization. This thesis mainly aims to examine the following questions: How does female image change in the trend of urbanization? What are spiritual puzzlements caused by the changes? What are the countermeasures to solve the problems? This thesis is composed of three chapters. Chapter one discusses the The urbanization in Jia’s works. Chapter two serves as the vital part of this thesis to analyze the female image in the process of urbanization, covering there aspects: women in rural areas, women wandering between urban and rural areas and urban women returning to the rural land. Chapter three concludes Jia Pingwa’s perspective and standpoint toward urbanization.
