A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Excerpts From Uncertain Justice: The Roberts Court And The Constitution

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of the first chapter of Uncertain Justice: The Roberts Court and the Constitution.The three pillars of the civil rights movement, blacks, women and gays, have profoundly changed the United States and have seen splendid achievements. However, these achievements would have been impossible without the Supreme Court of the Unites States and its justices who stand firm with libel thinking and rendered their commitments to the New Deal. The ups and downs of the civil rights movement are companioned by the backwards and forwards of the Supreme Court. The joint work Uncertain Justice: The Roberts Court and the Supreme Court by Laurence Tribe, a scholar of constitutional law and professor at Harvard and Joshua Matz, a Juris Doctor degree holder, gives us an insight into the process from the slight right-deviationist conservatism, neutrality principle, to a sharp turn towards extreme right-deviationist conservatism of the Supreme Court with the quotes and citations of nearly all its remarkable cases decided in the recent ten years.Despite positioned as a popular legal reading, Uncertain Justice is also abundant in history, cultural as well as legal knowledge and serves a perfect combination of readability and information. Featuring a lot of anecdotes, the introduction to many remarkable events and powerful opinions by the justices of the Supreme Court, the book takes us to the very background of the people and the events, and provides us a glimpse of the standpoints of the authors of the book. In response to different characteristics of the source text, the author adopts what he thinks to be the most proper translation methods so as to best realize the readability of the book.This report falls into four parts: the task description, the process description with the analysis of the source text and the difficulties the author has been confronted with in the translation process, the case study with some examples that make his translation strategies and translation skills known, and the conclusion. In approaching the translation of the legal reading, the author also wishes the translation a unique point of entry in the study of the Supreme Court and the judicial system of the United States.
