Under the background of globalization, the reform and opening up has gradually been deepened.China has increasingly focused on external exchanges abroad, involving not only economy, politics and culture, but also legislation, academy and many other fields. In the legal and academic fields,China has always attached great importance to its exchanges with the outside world in order to promote the development of social sciences and laws in China. This thesis is a translation practice report on the translation of the ninth Chapter of the Dissent and the Supreme Court written by Melvin I.Urofsky.The legal monograph Dissent and the Supreme Court belongs to social science text and it systematically expounds the dissent in the Supreme Court of the United States through the introduction and analysis of the specific cases.Choosing Dissent and the Supreme Court as the translation materials of this translation practice report, the author teases out the process of translation practice of the legal monograph and explores the feasibility and rationality of using Skopos theory to guide the translation practice of the legal monograph.Based on the textual type and linguistic features of the translation materials, the author uses Skopos theory as a guidance to analyze the difficulties in the translation practice of such texts, and analyze specific cases to explore the corresponding translation strategies from vocabulary, syntax and discourse levels in detail. The author finds that in the English-Chinese translation of social science texts such as legal monographs, macroscopic translation purposes can be combined with the microscopic translation strategies and skills on vocabulary, syntax and discourses. Therefore, the author can choose the most appropriate strategies under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos theory.Meanwhile, this report discusses the difficulties in translating legal monograph which belongs to social science texts, attempts to analyze legal monograph from the perspective of translation process, and summarizes the translation methods and strategies so as to provide a theoretical perspective for the translation of legal monograph with characteristics of both legal text and social science, thus further optimizing the translation process of the legal monograph. The author hopes this report can provide reference for the translation of similar texts in the future. The author also hopes that this translation practice report can inspire more translation lovers to think and to brainstorm for solving the problem of English-Chinese translation of legal monograph that belongs to social science texts.
