This dissertation was based on a comparative research on the difference between comprehensive or intensive textbooks of Chinese and Japanese which were published in their respective countries. With a focus on the contents and exercises, three Japanese textbooks and three Chinese textbooks were chosen as the comparative study project. Although they belong to second language textbooks similarly, the Chinese textbooks and the Japanese books are different in their layout of themes and exercises, thereby indicating their different teaching concept. Moreover, as a part of this study, an investigation was carried out through Japanese Chinese language learners and Chinese Japanese language learners to find out their most interesting themes during language learning. As a result, being aware of the contrast between themes issued in current textbooks and language learner’s interests, the Chinese teaching and Japanese teaching will be more effective.
